What is curatorial study? Information on curatorial courses both in Japan and abroad.
|
Nowadays, the word "Curator" can be seen increasingly often. The number of curating courses has increased in Japan. In Europe and the States there are already some famous courses even though the field is still new in the academic world.
We are aware that it is difficult to get information on curating courses in Japan, and we have invited current alumni from these courses to come and speak about them.
In the beginning, Hasegawa gave an over-all view of curatorial courses both in Japan and abroad, and talked a bit about CuratorLab in Konstfack (Stockholm). Then Yuu Takehisa, curator of Mito Art Tower, did a presentation on the Creative Curating MA Course of Goldsmiths College (London). Takehisa discussed the content of classes and tuition fee, how the course affected her career path and her way of thinking. Then Eri Otomo, one of directors of AAN -Art Autonomy Network - gave a presentation about CCA Kitakyusyu, discussing both the advantages and the disadvantages of its research program.
Finally, Mizuki Endo made a presentation from the USA via Skype. He was a winner of the PREMIO LORENZO BONALDI PER L’ARTE PRIZE in 2006 and is now staying in the USA, studying and teaching at the California College of Arts, Curatorial Practice Program (San Francisco). Endo explained about the course and its programs and exhibitions held at the school using the website.
The last part was a discussion with the audience. We had been expecting attendance from people who were seriously thinking about submitting applications to those schools, but actually most of the audience was just interested in curating as a profession, and as a result this lecture was not just informative but also included a discussion the essentials of curating. Questions were asked such as “What is the relation between a curator, an artist and an institution?”, and “What exactly does the job covers?”, which were difficult to answer. We panellists tried to answer with examples of performative curating by Rosa Martinez and others, and to explain the different situation for curators in Europe, the US and Japan. We also talked about how in Japan, a curator can realize his/her plan in a rigid museum setting and to persuade its director who is usually from a totally different field.
Thanks to the panel and the audience. We hope to continue the discussion another time.
