Yoshiaki Kaihatsu |
|
Kaihatsu Yoshiaki began his career as an artist in the early 90s’. Such as composing an installation from the very dust collected within a gallery and exhibiting another installation themed on shadows, Kaihatsu works vigorously in varying mediums. Calling for numerous people to partake in his “365 Daisakusen (operation)”, at times, his projects are executed through interaction with people. From 2000 onward, Kaihatsu has exhibited three-dimensional works created from Styrofoam and lighting.
Actively organizing exhibitions and operating artist initiatives , Kaihatsu himself has produced a residency exchange program last year between Hong Kong and Japan. Fads Art Space and gallery TEZZ are among his involvement.
Taking off from his 98’ residency at the ISCP (New York), Kaihatsu has participated in several residencies such as the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin) and Banff Art Center (Banff). Currently, he resides in New York.
A strong, performative element, ridden with humor, is especially displayed in Kaihatsu’s image works. In documenting “Home Coming”, Kaihatsu begins by purchasing in Japan a pint of “Bulgaria Yogurt”. Kaihatsu then travels to Bulgaria in attempt to culture more yogurt _from his batch of Japan-made-Bulgarian-yogurt. With the drinking of his yogurt, the mission comes to a full round. Molded with humor, Kaihatsu objectively addresses Japan’s blunt stereotypes for the faraway country Bulgaria.
