Mami Kosemura

Born in 1975, Kanagawa

Mami Kosemura received a PhD. in Painting from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 2005. Her major exhibitions include a solo exhibition - 'Flowering Plants of the Four Seasons' (ASK? art space kimura, Tokyo) and group exhibitions: 'Nihonga Painting: Six Provocative Artists' (Yokohama Museum of Art, Kanagawa) and 'Projected Realities: Video Art from East Asia' (Asia Society Museum, New York).

Composed of enormous number of digital photos, her work is an accumulation of moments. It exists within a time axis, and the subtle but clear changes found there suggests not the sequential existence of an object (or living organism) shown in the work but that it exists by renewing moments. Her work often quotes and digitizes old paintings such as the still lives of Francisco de Zurbar and the painted screens of Naonobu Kano. With an intensity of layered moments, these images invite us to a different world. (Makoto Hashimoto, courtesy of CINRA MAGAZINE)
