Satoru Tamura

Many of Tamura’s work are under truly simple ideas. To destroy a plastic toy model, to set a fire a washing machine, to match the weight exactly, his work seems to follow a specific agenda. As stated by the artist himself, Tamura attempts detach his subjects from their various semantics, ideologies, cultural representations and commodities. This sort of mannerism is apparent not only in Tamura’s moving images, but also in his sculptures. The exuberance felt from the destruction of plastic models, the moment of gratification felt from exacting a body weight to 100kg, these emotions come natural to the passive audience as the consumption of daily mass media. The wit and determination of his works are played out in a firm, plastic manner.

Born in 1972. Tamura has graduated BA in Arts and Design from University of Tsukuba. Participated group exhibitions: “No Tatami Spot” Theatre National de Chaillot, Paris; “New Media・New Face” Inter Communication Center, Tokyo, “Moving Japanese” Kulturhuset, Stockholm. Solo exhibitions include: TAKURO SOMEYA contemporary art, Chiba prefecture, Gallery Q, Tokyo, the Modern Arts Factory, Tokyo.
