Shiro Masuyama

"Intervention in public space" would concisely describe Masuyama's projects. Having studied architecture, Masuyama felt unsatisfied with his job in the architecture field, and entered a contemporary art school in Yokohama , B-zemi. It was after his search for the suitable context to present his project that he went into the art world.
His first project was to set up a dating box for couples sitting at regular intervals beside the Tamagawa River. With this project Masuyama began to work in the space between architecture and art. Masuyama describes his work as a "trap"; it appeals to and thus reveals people's desires. For instance, the desire can be people's action of picking up high price coin as seen in the 500 Yen project and 20 ATS project. Here he exposes both the indifference and the desires of urban people.
Shiro Masuyama was born in 1971. He lives and works in Berlin. He has shown his work at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and MAK (Austria), among others. Besides creating artwork, last year he organized artist-in-residence exchange programs with Hong Kong.
