Gathering actual sounds and imagery from the objective world, Jungju An selects, crops, rearranges, and wittily juxtaposes elements into a subtle, subjective viewing of the world. In The Bottles, Jungju An follows liquor bottles relentlessly being assembled in a Korean factory. One up-close and another from a distant, two different clips of the factory line are simultaneously played together on the vertically split video. As if playing two turntables with two separate soundtracks, An carefully arranges the mechanical noises collected from the production line, and operates their “music” to correspond and feed-back one another. By controlling the pitch, rhythm, and beat, the at-once seemingly cold, harsh sounds of the machines are transformed to a deep bass-like hum, organic, like breathing, to the observer’s ear.
In Smoking, two men sit apart having a cigarette break. The complemented background noise is a wavering, high, nasal-like squeal. Distinct words are not spoken, yet the interchanging noises seem to be engaged in a relaxed conversation.
Last in Their War 3, Jungju An shoots footages from a political/cultural parade. Instead of documenting the festivity as is, the music and movement of the marching men are cropped and repeated, in effect made more theatrical. Through the process, Jungju An becomes the non-participant choreographer of the parade.
Jungju An was born in Korea. In 2006, he acquired MA from the Yonsei University. His moving images has been presented in many group shows in Korea and various countries. His works have been shown in the National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Nuit Blanche, France, InsaArt Space Korea,, Arco 07 Spain.
An has stayed at HIAP, an artist in residence program in Helsinki, and also exhibited solo in 2007.
